BBC's 'Babies' Drama: A Tender Exploration of Pregnancy Loss and Hope
The new BBC drama Babies, set to premiere on March 30, 2026, is an emotionally charged series that delves into the heart-wrenching journey of a married couple facing pregnancy loss. Written by acclaimed writer Stefan Golaszewski, known for his work on Marriage, this six-part series promises to take viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions, balancing devastation with moments of warmth and humour.
Navigating Trauma and Love
The story follows Lisa, portrayed by Siobhán Cullen, and Stephen, played by Paapa Essiedu, as they navigate the challenges of starting a family in their thirties. Their path to parenthood is anything but smooth, marked by multiple miscarriages that test their relationship and hope. Amidst the trauma, it is their unwavering love for each other that serves as a beacon, guiding them through grief while they seek solace in humour and connection.
Alongside their narrative, the series introduces Amanda, played by Charlotte Riley, and Dave, portrayed by Jack Bannon. This new couple, seemingly mismatched on paper, explores their compatibility while uncovering complexities that strain Stephen and Dave's long-standing friendship. Their dynamic adds layers of light and shade to the show, offering sarcastic quips and foolish naïveté to lift the mood in darker moments.
Cast Embraces Heightened Responsibility
In exclusive interviews ahead of the release, the cast and creator emphasized the profound responsibility of telling this story. Siobhán Cullen, 36, explained, "I always feel a responsibility to a story when I'm working on something, but that sense is slightly heightened given some of the things that my character goes through. You just want to make sure that you're telling a story that's truthful and honest." To achieve authenticity, she conducted extensive research, including listening to podcasts and drawing from friends' personal experiences, with midwives on set providing crucial insights into vulnerable states.
Despite the emotionally draining scenes, Cullen described the set as a "happy" environment, where the subject matter bonded the cast and crew. "As a cast and crew, there was a real sense of ownership from every department that we were all chipping in to tell this story together," she recalled. "On the challenging days, people checked in more and were more delicate, but I felt fully supported in every capacity."
Surprising Realities and Emotional Growth
Paapa Essiedu, 35, found all elements of the story surprising, from jarring comments by friends on different pregnancy journeys to the matter-of-fact ways doctors explain loss. He believes this surprise enhances the realism, drawing viewers into the characters' emotional journeys. Essiedu noted Stephen's significant growth throughout the series, from initially prioritizing his wife's pain to confronting his own suppressed grief in a powerful emotional release he called a "gift."
Jack Bannon, 34, discussed his character Dave's struggle with masculinity, describing him as "a man who's drowning" and unable to make meaningful connections. Bannon highlighted the tragedy of watching Dave try to stay afloat, but by the series' end, hope prevails as he begins to understand the importance of love, particularly with his son.
Complex Characters and Audience Connection
Charlotte Riley, 44, was drawn to her role as Amanda, a standoffish and mysterious character tormented by past loss. She enjoyed playing someone whose motivations are not immediately clear, saying, "It's really good fun to play a character you don't understand on the surface. It's a really rich world to play in, and I enjoyed mining that character for all her little treasures."
Creator Stefan Golaszewski aims for the show to foster audience engagement rather than dictate conversations. He stated, "I think the show is actually about the audience. What we hope the audience does is have an emotional experience and feel in connection and spoken to and spoken with. We hope the show allows a conversation to occur, rather than dictate what the conversation is."
