Bollywood's Deadly Nexus: Mafia Extortion and Violence Return to Haunt Film Industry
Bollywood's Mafia Nexus: Extortion and Violence Return

The Resurgence of Bollywood's Mafia Menace

Bollywood's intimate and perilous relationship with organized crime has re-emerged as a dominant and deadly force within the film industry. For decades, this symbiotic connection between stars, directors, producers, and crime bosses has been one of the worst-kept secrets in entertainment, characterized by glamour, money laundering, and extortion.

Recent Incidents Highlight Ongoing Threats

In a brazen display of intimidation, Bollywood actor Ranvir Singh recently reported an extortion call to Mumbai police, involving a WhatsApp voice note demanding millions of dollars. Authorities have launched an investigation and enhanced his security. Similarly, last week, several rounds were fired into the home of prominent producer and director Rohit Shetty, with attackers posting on social media that this was merely a "trailer" and warning the industry to stay within limits.

The most audacious attacks targeted superstar Salman Khan in 2024, where a threatening email was followed by gunfire at his residence. His security has since been fortified with armed personnel and bulletproof glass. The transnational Bishnoi gang, led by imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for these assaults, citing grievances over a 1998 blackbuck hunting incident.

Historical Context and Industry Vulnerabilities

Until legal reforms in 2000, Bollywood lacked organized financing, pushing producers toward alternative revenue sources, which allowed mafia syndicates to step in with money and protection. This led to high-profile incidents like the 1997 shooting of music tycoon Gulshan Kumar and the 2001 assassination attempt on director Rakesh Roshan over film rights disputes.

The nexus between Bollywood and crime bosses such as Karim Lala, Haji Mastan, Dawood Ibrahim, Abu Salem, and Chhota Rajan was an open secret, often resulting in only low-level operatives facing consequences. Special police units in Mumbai have had mixed success in dismantling these networks.

Notable Cases and Gang Activities

Actor Sanjay Dutt's conviction for possessing weapons linked to the 1993 Mumbai bombings, which killed 257 people, remains a famous example of this toxic relationship. Dutt served five years in prison, maintaining the arms were for family protection.

The Bishnoi gang, designated a terror organization by Canada, has been linked to multiple violent acts, including the 2022 murder of Punjabi rap star Sidhu Moose Wala and the killing of former minister Baba Siddique in 2025, seen as a warning to Salman Khan and others. Reports indicate a dozen film personalities have recently received threats from individuals associated with this gang.

Despite periods of lull, the resurgence led by Lawrence Bishnoi signals a return to the earlier years of mafia dominance, underscoring the ongoing, one-sided, and deadly affair that continues to plague Bollywood.
