Coronation Street has introduced a character poised to become one of British television's most compelling villains, with newcomer Beth Nixon taking on the challenging role of sports coach Megan.
From Auditions to Cobbles Stardom
While Megan only appeared on screens last week, this marks actress Beth Nixon's first television role after previously auditioning for other parts on the iconic Manchester-based soap. Beth revealed she had previously tried out for the role of Lauren Bolton, now played by Cait Fitton, and later for a character who was making life difficult for Lauren at a mother and baby unit.
Megan's introduction saw her bringing Will Driscoll, played by Lucas Hodgson-Wale, back to the Rovers Return after his attempt to go AWOL. However, viewers quickly discovered she wasn't the good Samaritan she appeared to be, but rather a predator grooming the vulnerable teenager.
Finding Humanity in a Villain
Despite playing what she describes as a 'calculated' character, Beth emphasised the importance of finding Megan's humanity. 'She's not a one-dimensional character,' the actress explained. 'She's not just this evil person.'
Beth has worked extensively on Megan's backstory, revealing the character is deeply insecure and desperate to be loved and adored. 'Her reasons for that will eventually be uncovered,' she teased, describing Megan as a 'flawed' and 'really complex' person whose life experiences have led her to this point.
'As an actor, you've got to delve deep and find a reason for why a person, a "villain" as such is a loose term, behaves in that way,' Beth stated about her approach to the difficult role.
Megan's Manipulative Plans Unfold
The storyline is set to develop significantly as Megan grows closer to Daniel Osbourne, portrayed by Rob Mallard, who secures her a job at Weatherfield High in upcoming scenes. Unfortunately, Daniel appears destined to become a pawn in her manipulative schemes.
Beth teased that viewers will see Megan 'slowly worm her way into the family' and befriend Eva and Maggie, convincing them she's a brilliant mentor for Will. 'So, no one is suspecting anything at the moment,' she revealed.
However, Lauren Bolton will become suspicious because she has 'experienced something very similar to what Will's going through.' According to Beth, Lauren 'knows the signs and she spots them on the street.'
This suspicion forces Megan to change tactics, using Daniel as a 'cover-up' and revealing 'how truly vile she can be.' Beth concluded ominously: 'She will stop at nothing to come out on top and survive, basically.'
