Emmerdale's formidable Kim Tate is reeling from a devastating personal loss, setting the stage for explosive confrontations and a heartbreaking betrayal. The ITV stalwart, played by Claire King, faced a tragic turn of events this week that has left her isolated and furious with her own family.
A Fatal Accident and a Family Fractured
The drama unfolded on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in episodes available on ITVX. Kim's world came crashing down after she organised a special surprise for her close friend Lydia Dingle, played by Karen Blick. The treat was a personal mini-concert at The Woolpack from none other than Jason Donovan.
However, the celebrations were cut short when Vanessa Woodfield, portrayed by Michelle Hardwick, reported seeing people with shotguns acting recklessly on Kim's land. An illegal shoot was in progress. Without telling anyone, Kim mounted her cherished horse, Ice, and rode off to investigate.
Tragedy struck when Ice's leg became entangled in a snare. Kim was thrown from the horse, suffering a severe leg injury herself. While Kim eventually made a good recovery in hospital, the injuries to her beloved horse were too severe. On Vanessa's advice, Kim's son, Joe Tate, made the agonising decision to have Ice put to sleep.
Kim's Wrath and a Guilty Conscience
Kim is utterly distraught and directing her grief into rage, primarily at Joe. She is haunted by the thought that Ice would have been wondering where she was in his final moments. As Gabby, Dawn, and Lydia visited her hospital bedside, Kim could think of nothing but Joe's role in her horse's death. She insisted on handling the arrangements with the crematorium herself, pushing everyone away.
The only person Kim feels she can rely on is Lydia, whom she describes as 'like family.' This is tearing Lydia apart because, unbeknownst to Kim, Lydia and her husband Sam are directly responsible for the accident.

Crucially, it was also Lydia who suggested the participants use snares for rabbits to prevent them from engaging in even crueller hare coursing. The snare that fatally injured Ice was there because of her.

Wracked with guilt over Kim's accident and the subsequent fracture in her family, Lydia has confessed to Sam that she wants to come clean. She cannot live with the secret any longer.
