Helen Worth Quit Coronation Street Due to Exhaustion

Coronation Street Icon Helen Worth Opens Up About Departure After Five Decades

Legendary Coronation Street actress Helen Worth has publicly discussed the reasons behind her decision to leave the iconic soap opera after an astonishing fifty-year tenure as beloved matriarch Gail Platt. The character's departure from Weatherfield occurred just over a year ago, with Gail receiving a rare soap opera happy ending as she flew to the south of France with new husband Jesse Chadwick, portrayed by John Thomson, for a fresh beginning.

The Emotional Finale and Brief Return

Gail Platt's final scenes on the cobbled streets of Weatherfield featured heartfelt moments with her son David, played by Jack P Shepherd, her mother Audrey Roberts, portrayed by Sue Nicholls, and even a brief, surreal conversation with the ghost of murderer Richard Hillman, played by Brian Capron. Following her initial exit, Worth made a brief return during the Christmas season through a video message to her on-screen family, maintaining the character's presence within the show's universe.

"I Got a Bit Tired": The Real Reason Behind the Exit

Helen Worth, now 75 years old, has candidly revealed that her primary motivation for leaving the long-running series was simple exhaustion. "It was only a bit towards the end when I got a bit tired," the actress confessed. "But the first, how many years? Forty-nine years, were a dream."

She elaborated further, stating, "My final husband, John Thomson, was absolutely gorgeous to me, because by then I was rattling a bit. It was around about 4,000 episodes and I was rattling a little bit." Despite acknowledging both good and bad days during her tenure, Worth emphasized that the positive memories ultimately overshadowed any difficulties.

Future Possibilities and Executive Comments

While ruling out a full-time return to the role, Helen Worth has left the door slightly ajar for potential future appearances. ITV soap executive Iain MacLeod has previously hinted at this possibility, revealing that conversations with the actress have included discussions about potential returns for significant storylines involving the Platt family.

"Helen and I have had a conversation where she's said, 'There might be times in my future where I'll come back'," MacLeod disclosed. "If there's a big storyline going on with the Platt family, she might want to come in and play a role in that. We certainly wanted to leave the door open so that was possible. We wanted that to still be on the cards."
