While Jessie Buckley captivates audiences on screen and stage, the acclaimed actress fiercely guards her private world away from the spotlight. The 36-year-old star, currently winning plaudits as Agnes in Hamnet opposite Paul Mescal, has built a formidable career since her 2008 breakthrough on BBC's I'd Do Anything. Yet, the details of her personal life, including her enigmatic husband, a secret wedding, and a historic country house, have remained largely under wraps – until now.
The Enigmatic Husband: Freddie Sorensen
Jessie Buckley is married to Freddie Sorensen, a man who deliberately stays out of the public eye. Describing him as working in the mental health profession, Buckley revealed on the Table Manners podcast in 2024 that Freddie is English and hails from Islington. The couple met on a blind date, set up by a music executive Jessie worked with on the 2018 film Wild Rose.
Prior to his current career, Sorensen worked as a television producer on major projects including The X Factor and ITV's Game of Talents UK. He also produced two episodes of the BBC's Gladiators reboot in 2022. According to a recent British Vogue report, anonymity is now essential to his new profession, explaining his absence from red carpet events.
Despite this preference for privacy, the Daily Mail uncovered that Freddie did support Jessie at the 2022 Oscars, where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Lost Daughter. Photos from the event show him smiling at a table with Buckley, Olivia Colman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
A Secret Wedding & Historic Norfolk Home
The couple tied the knot in a secret wedding in 2023, choosing to exchange vows at their home in Norfolk. Buckley shared the charmingly personal details on the Table Manners podcast. The pair discovered their historic house, which dates back to the 1500s, after friends who had moved to Norfolk showed them the property.
"It's a really amazing old house that's been there forever," she said of the home, which she described as "falling down" when they found it. Of the wedding celebration itself, Jessie fondly recalled: "One of my favourite memories of the day was I wanted a keg of Guinness, and I definitely wanted their cheese toasties at a certain hour."
Embracing Motherhood
Jessie and Freddie are now parents to a young daughter, whose arrival Buckley announced last year. In a November interview with Elle, she opened up about the joys of motherhood. "The best thing about being a mom is just when even when you're having a hard day, they give you these otherworldly little smiles and make your heart crack into a thousand pieces," she shared.
She added that her daughter had just started to laugh and make silly noises, calling it "the funniest and cutest thing in the world." Speaking on The New York Times' Modern Love podcast in December, she reflected on the transformative experience: "Everything's different… Everything's new. This little human is new. You're new. Your relationship's new. Your whole relationship to the world is new. It's intense, but I just love it so much."
While Jessie Buckley's professional star continues to rise, with a BAFTA nomination, an Academy Award nomination, and a Laurence Olivier Award to her name, it is clear her most cherished role is found away from the cameras, in the private sanctuary she has built with her family.
