Netflix's Gritty Nordic Noir 'Detective Hole' Becomes Instant UK Chart Success

Netflix subscribers have enthusiastically embraced a new Norwegian detective drama based on the internationally bestselling book series by acclaimed author Jo Nesbø. The nine-episode serial killer mystery titled Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole premiered this week, marking the first television adaptation of the beloved Harry Hole novels.

From Page to Screen: A Long-Awaited Adaptation

The series specifically adapts the fifth installment in Nesbø's series, The Devil's Star, bringing to life the complex world of detective Harry Hole. With over 60 million books sold worldwide—including 5.6 million in Norway alone, surpassing the country's entire population—the adaptation arrives with significant anticipation from the author's global fanbase.

Netflix's official synopsis describes the series as 'a whodunnit serial killer mystery led by famed anti-hero Harry Hole' created by one of crime fiction's greatest storytellers. Beneath the surface, the show presents a nuanced character drama about two police officers operating on opposite sides of the law.

Stellar Cast and Creative Team

Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Oslo, the series stars Tobias Santelmann as the brilliant but tormented homicide detective Harry Hole, with Joel Kinnaman portraying his corrupt adversary Tom Waaler. The impressive supporting cast includes Pia Tjelta, Ellen Helinder, Anders Baasmo, Maxime Baune Bochud, Kåre Conradi, and Simon J. Berger.

Adding to the production's prestige, the original score was composed by musical legends Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, enhancing the series' dark, atmospheric tone.

Critical Acclaim and Viewer Response

Since its release, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole has rapidly climbed Netflix's UK charts, currently ranking as the sixth most-watched television series on the platform. The show has achieved a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its execution.

Collider described the series as 'a roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride that lives up to the promises baked into the thriller subgenre's name', while FandomWire called it 'stylish, gritty, and suspenseful... Nordic noir done right.' HeavenofHorror praised the production values, noting 'everything from the casting to that delicious Nordic Noir vibe makes this Netflix production a gorgeous viewing experience.'

Viewers have echoed this enthusiasm, describing the series as 'an intense, atmospheric ride', 'gripping and unforgettable', and noting that it 'exceeded their expectations.'

Previous Adaptation and Creative Vision

This marks the second screen adaptation of the Harry Hole character, following the 2017 film The Snowman starring Michael Fassbender. That adaptation, based on the seventh novel, underperformed commercially and critically, grossing $43.1 million worldwide against a $35 million budget while receiving criticism for being 'clichéd and uninvolving.'

Director and executive producer Øystein Karlsen explained the television approach to Netflix's Tudum: 'It's the first time the series starts viewing the story solidly from Harry's perspective... it's an incredible page-turner of a book.' He challenged viewers, saying 'You will have to watch it twice to realise you could have figured it out along the way.'

Author Jo Nesbø, who adapted his own work for the series, shared his creative philosophy: 'For me, storytelling isn't about serving people what they think they want, but what they didn't know they wanted. We will try to create something fresh, exciting, and surprising with respect to the book version of Harry.'

Oslo as Character

The production filmed across more than 160 different locations over 113 days in Oslo, intentionally highlighting the city's atmospheric qualities. Karlsen emphasized Oslo's importance: 'Having been a fan of the books for years, I always felt that Oslo on its own is such an important character in the stories. It has the perfect mixture of rich and poor, dark and light, old and new, to balance the darkness and suspense in the universe that is Harry's. Jo's version of Oslo is sort of a Gotham version, and we enhance that in the series.'

Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole is now available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, offering viewers a fresh take on Nordic noir that honors its literary origins while creating compelling television drama.
