Pretty Woman 2: Roberts & Gere 'In Talks' for Sequel 35 Years Later
Pretty Woman Sequel in Works After AI Posters

Fresh reports suggest a long-awaited sequel to the iconic 1990 romantic comedy 'Pretty Woman' is officially in development, with original stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere said to be in negotiations to return.

From AI Hoax to Real Hope

Speculation about a follow-up film was initially sparked earlier this year when AI-generated posters for a supposed Netflix sequel began circulating online. The fake promotional material used the tagline 'A second chance', but was later revealed to be the work of an overzealous fan, disappointing the film's dedicated global audience.

However, new information indicates the project may now be genuinely moving forward. According to an insider speaking to The Mirror, Roberts, 57, and Gere, 71, are 'in talks' with Disney executives to reprise their legendary roles as Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis.

'No contracts have been signed yet, but an early script is being worked on, and barring any unforeseen problems, both Richard and Julia are on board,' the source claimed. 'Pretty Woman 2 appears to be on.'

A Complicated Legacy and Star's Past Doubts

This potential development marks a significant shift from the lead actors' previous public comments about the film. Roberts once admitted to The Guardian that she didn't believe 'Pretty Woman' could be made in the modern era, citing plot elements that audiences might now 'poke a hole in'.

Gere has been even more critical in the past. In 2012, he labelled the film his 'least favourite thing' and expressed discomfort with the power dynamics in the story between a sex worker and a billionaire. 'It made those guys seem dashing, which was so wrong,' he reflected, adding that society is now more sceptical of such portrayals.

Despite this, Gere showed a softer side at the 2024 Venice Film Festival when shown a clip of the famous piano scene, calling it 'a sexy scene' and joking about his perceived lack of chemistry with Roberts at the time.

What Could a Sequel Look Like?

The original film, released in 1990, became a global phenomenon, grossing a staggering $463.4 million (£349.9m) worldwide. It followed the story of Hollywood escort Vivian, hired by businessman Edward for a week, with their professional arrangement blossoming into an unlikely romance.

While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, Roberts herself has previously mused on the characters' futures. In a 2023 interview, she suggested, 'I think he passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling. And now she runs his business.'

It is also notable that Gere was not the first choice for Edward; the late Sean Connery was considered, while Al Pacino and Burt Reynolds both turned down the role. The project remains in its early stages, but after 35 years, it seems Vivian and Edward's story might finally get a new chapter.
