The release of Rob Reiner's final film project has been postponed indefinitely following the tragic deaths of the acclaimed filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The concert film, titled 'Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale', was scheduled for release in 2026 but is now on hold.
Project Put On Hold After Family Tragedy
US distributor Bleecker Street confirmed the delay to industry publication Variety. The company stated that the planned 2026 release would be paused until "the best path forward is decided with those closest to Rob and his family." This decision comes after Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were found deceased at their Los Angeles home on Sunday. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with their murders.
Stonehenge: A Fitting Finale for Spinal Tap
The film was conceived as a concert follow-up to this year's sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. It comprises live footage of the legendary mock-rock band – played by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer – performing near the ancient Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire, UK.
The location holds deep significance for fans of the original 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap. It references one of the comedy's most iconic jokes, where a disastrously small model of Stonehenge is lowered onto the stage due to a measurement mix-up.
Filmmakers were spotted at the historic site in August, with English Heritage confirming a private hire. An October statement revealed that guest musicians Eric Clapton, Shania Twain, and Josh Groban performed at the concert. Notably, none of this Stonehenge footage was used in the recently released sequel, though a cover version by Elton John was recorded for it.
The Legacy of Music at Stonehenge
The planned film would have added to Stonehenge's sporadic musical history. The first officially sanctioned music show there was staged by DJs Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox in 2018. Prior to that, the site hosted the Stonehenge Free Festival concerts between 1974 and 1984.
The future of Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale now rests in the hands of Reiner's family, friends, and collaborators, leaving fans to wait for news on whether this unique concert film will ever see the light of day.
