Elephant and Castle food market closure: Trader speaks out

Mercato Metropolitano, the popular food market at Elephant and Castle, is set to close after more than a decade at its Newington Causeway site, leaving 40 independent traders facing an uncertain future. The closure comes ahead of a major redevelopment in the area, with some traders allowed to continue operating through the summer before relocating to a temporary market provided by Southwark Council.

Trader reaction: 'It won't be the same'

Anil Kumar, manager of Hermanos Taco House, which has been at the market for eight years, expressed shock despite long-standing rumours. 'It's a bit surprising for us because we have been in this uncertainty for many years. We have been hearing rumours for three or four years and thought people were going to keep saying the same thing, but this year it is actually happening,' he said.

Kumar fears the temporary site will struggle to recreate the vibrant atmosphere that made Mercato Metropolitano a South London destination. 'Even though we are very thankful to have a spot in the temporary market, it will not be the same environment. This is a very big place in central London and it's hard to find a space like this,' he added.

Impact on workers and small businesses

The manager also voiced concerns about the closure's effect on livelihoods. 'Many people depend on this. It's the only business for many, and when this place closes, obviously they lose employment,' he said. He questioned whether the smaller temporary site would attract enough customers to sustain existing businesses, forcing traders to look elsewhere. However, rising costs make it tough for independents to establish themselves in other markets. 'To get a new place in a different market is very hard - the entry fees are crazy! For a small business, it's not affordable,' Kumar noted.

What happens next

Mercato Metropolitano has confirmed it will continue trading throughout summer 2026, with its food traders, bars, and outdoor piazza remaining open before the move later this year. The market, known for its diverse global flavours, craft beers, and Crazy Boules experience, has been a key part of Elephant and Castle's food scene. The temporary market aims to provide continuity, but traders remain anxious about the future.
