London Welcomes Its First Dedicated Tortilla Bar at Seven Dials Market
London's culinary scene has just gained a vibrant new addition with the opening of the city's first-ever tortilla bar. Bask Street Boys, already known for their viral Basque cheesecake, has launched this innovative concept within the bustling Seven Dials Market, offering Londoners a taste of Spain without the need for a plane ticket.
An Authentic Basque Experience in the Heart of London
The tortilla bar operates with a traditional Basque approach, where food is displayed directly at the counter rather than ordered from a fixed menu. This format ensures that the selection changes daily, providing customers with a fresh and surprising experience every time they visit. Founder Mikael Manas Dieuzeide explains that London has been lacking a proper pintxos bar, despite growing interest in Basque cuisine and travel to destinations like San Sebastián.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the classic Spanish tortilla, prepared fresh to order using a cherished family recipe from the owner's grandmother. Customers can customise their tortilla with various toppings, including a particularly popular gooey cheese blend that combines Manchego, cheddar, and mozzarella. The dish is seasoned with Piment d'Espelette, a prized Basque chilli that adds a distinctive flavour.
Beyond Tortillas: A Full Basque Culinary Journey
While the tortillas are a major draw, the bar also offers a range of other Basque favourites. Options include Txistorra sausage, a flavourful paprika-spiced pork sausage, and all tortillas are served with a delicious olive oil-brushed baguette perfect for scooping up every last morsel.
The establishment also features an array of pintxos – traditional Spanish open sandwiches loaded with bold flavours. Standout choices include tuna stuffed inside sweet red piquillo peppers, along with creative cold skewers that pair unexpected ingredients like anchovies with olives, melon with Spanish ham, and grapes with goat's cheese.
From Humble Beginnings to Market Success
Bask Street Boys began as a street food stall specialising in Patatas Bravas before evolving into their current market presence. The tortilla bar represents a step toward founder Mikael Manas Dieuzeide's dream of eventually opening a full pintxos and tapas bar. For now, this casual, indulgent spot with its ever-changing menu and comforting flavours serves as what feels like a heartfelt tribute to northern Spain's culinary traditions.
The relaxed format and daily menu variations make this tortilla bar exactly the kind of place that invites repeat visits, offering Londoners a convenient yet authentic taste of Basque culture right in the centre of the city.
