Shoppers Flock to New Sydney Fish Market for Good Friday Rush
For many shoppers, Good Friday marked their first visit to the newly upgraded Sydney Fish Market, which opened its doors in January. The Easter celebration brought a palpable buzz to the harbor city's famous seafood destination, with crowds packing the premises from early morning.
Early Morning Bustle and Positive Reactions
Carmelo Lombardo, retail manager at GetFish, arrived at 2:30 AM and noted bustling trade since opening at 5 AM. "We're feeling great about it because the atmosphere and the buzz within the actual building and site is sensational," he said, comparing the new facility favorably to the old one.
Buddy and Tony, laden with multiple cooler bags after spending around a thousand dollars, echoed this sentiment. Tony, a longtime visitor since the old site's opening, declared the new building "the best thing since sliced cheese," highlighting its cleanliness, spaciousness, and ample parking.
Mixed Opinions on the Upgrade
However, not all feedback was uniformly positive. Angelo Vaxevani from Peter's Fish Market expressed a preference for the old premises, which he felt had "more of a vibe than what we have here today – more of a fish market. This here's more of a very nice, glorified Westfields." Despite this, he acknowledged that Easter crowds have been substantial since Thursday, with an even bigger lunch rush expected on Friday.
Jesslyn, who rode her bike to enjoy lunch at the markets, appreciated the consumer-friendly upgrades. "There's a lot more options I feel, it's definitely more consumer friendly ... The other one was more for buying fish to take home," she said, adding that the new market is "a bit more upmarket and doesn't smell like fish compared to the old ones."
Family Traditions and Seafood Shopping
Families were a common sight, with Sydney mother Zee hunting for oysters, sashimi, and fish for her kids. One child was overheard asking, "Ooh, can I try that?" as they passed by the stalls. On the sidelines, couples engaged in serious gameplanning, calculating how many kilograms of fillets, oysters, scallops, and prawns would be needed for entertaining over the long weekend.
An eager shopper exclaimed, "I just love crustaceans!" while standing shoulder to shoulder with other prawn pursuers, even before the lunch rush began. Yet, some things remain unchanged, as another shopper could be heard declaring, "Oh, it stinks!" – a reminder of the market's traditional character.
Overall Impact and Expectations
More than 60,000 visitors were expected through the doors on Good Friday, underscoring the market's popularity during the Easter period. The new facility has drawn praise for its modern amenities and improved accessibility, though it has sparked debate among longtime patrons about losing the old site's authentic fish market feel.
As the holiday weekend continues, the Sydney Fish Market remains a hub of activity, blending new upgrades with enduring traditions in the heart of the city's seafood scene.
