2026 International Booker Prize Shortlist Announced

International Booker Prize 2026 Shortlist Unveiled with Diverse Literary Voices

The prestigious International Booker Prize has announced its highly anticipated shortlist for the 2026 edition, featuring six exceptional works of translated fiction. This year's selection marks a significant milestone as the award celebrates its tenth anniversary, highlighting global literary talent and the art of translation.

Celebrating a Decade of Translated Fiction Excellence

The annual International Booker Prize honors the finest works of fiction translated into English, with a substantial £50,000 prize awarded to one winning author-translator pair, divided equally between them. This recognition underscores the crucial role translators play in bringing international literature to English-speaking audiences worldwide.

Notable Authors and Their Compelling Works

German author Daniel Kehlmann earns his second shortlisting for The Director, translated by Ross Benjamin. This novel draws inspiration from the life of film-maker GW Pabst and his complex relationship with Nazi Germany. Guardian reviewer Nina Allan praised the work, noting it possesses "all the darkness, shapeshifting ambiguity and glittering unease of a modern Grimms' fairytale" and declaring it "Kehlmann's best work yet."

French writer Marie NDiaye makes her first appearance on the International Booker shortlist with The Witch, translated by Jordan Stump. Originally published in French in 1996, this darkly comic novel represents NDiaye's continued literary recognition, having been previously longlisted in 2016 and shortlisted in 2013 when the prize honored authors for their complete body of work.

Taiwanese author Yáng Shuāng-zǐ joins the shortlist with Taiwan Travelogue, translated by Lin King. The novel follows a Japanese woman's journey through 1930s Taiwan under colonial rule and previously earned Taiwan's highest literary honor, the Golden Tripod award, when originally published in Mandarin Chinese in 2020.

Debut Works and Additional Shortlisted Authors

The shortlist includes two remarkable debut novels: The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran by German author Shida Bazyar, translated by Ruth Martin, which traces an Iranian family's experience through revolution and exile, and She Who Remains by Bulgarian writer Rene Karabash, translated by Izidora Angel, a coming-of-age story set within a patriarchal Albanian community.

Completing the list is Brazilian writer Ana Paula Maia's On Earth As It Is Beneath, translated by Padma Viswanathan, a powerful novella set in a brutal former slave plantation transformed into a penal colony.

Judges Praise Historical Resonance and Human Insight

Judging chair and author Natasha Brown emphasized the collection's historical depth, stating: "These six shortlisted books capture moments from across the past century, these books reverberate with history. Rereading each book, we found hope, insight and burning humanity – along with unforgettable characters to whom I'm sure readers will return again and again."

Diversity and Selection Process

The 2026 shortlist demonstrates remarkable diversity, with five of the six authors being women and four of the six translators also women. The works were originally written in five different languages, with authors and translators collectively representing eight distinct nationalities.

The judging panel, which includes mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, translator Sophie Hughes, and writers Troy Onyango and Nilanjana S Roy alongside Brown, selected these six titles from a longlist of thirteen books. These were themselves chosen from an impressive 128 submissions received for consideration. Each shortlisted title receives £5,000 in recognition.

Previous Winners and Longlist Highlights

Last year's International Booker Prize was awarded to Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq, translated by Deepa Bhasthi. The remaining longlisted titles for 2026 included notable works such as We Are Green and Trembling by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, The Remembered Soldier by Anjet Daanje, and The Deserters by Mathias Énard, among others.
