V&A East Museum Opens in Stratford: A New Cultural Landmark for London

The V&A East Museum, a highly anticipated addition to London's cultural scene, is set to open its doors in Stratford this month. This major project, a decade in the making, marks a significant expansion for the Victoria and Albert Museum, building on its legacy in Kensington with recent ventures like the Young V&A in Bethnal Green and the V&A East Storehouse.

Originally conceived in 2016 as part of the Olympic legacy plans, the V&A East initiative has been a focal point for east London's regeneration. The storehouse component, which opened to wide acclaim last year, houses over 250,000 objects and 350,000 books from the V&A's archives, earning a spot on TIME's World's Greatest Places list for its innovative approach to museum experiences.

Opening Details and Location

The V&A East Museum will officially open on Saturday, April 18, 2026, following member previews on the preceding Thursday and Friday. Located at East Bank, 107 Carpenters Rd in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, E20 2AR, the museum is built on the site of the 2012 London Olympics. Its main entrance is on Aquatic Walk, with convenient access from Hackney Wick Overground station (an 8-minute walk), Stratford International (17 minutes), and Stratford station (20 minutes).

Visitors can also reach the museum by bus, including the 388 route that stops outside Here East, or via Here East bus shuttles from Stratford stations running every 10 minutes on weekdays from 6:30 am to 9 pm. For cyclists, bike lanes throughout Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park lead to cycle racks and Santander Cycle docks on Parkes Street, offering a sustainable transport option.

Exhibitions and Events

The inaugural exhibition, The Music is Black: A British Story, opens on April 18 and explores how Black British music has shaped British culture over 125 years. Featuring more than 200 objects, the exhibition is divided into four acts and includes items such as Winifred Atwell's piano, Joan Armatrading's childhood guitar, and Jme's Nintendo used in early music experiments. It also showcases newly acquired photographs of artists like Kemistry and Storm, Mis-Teeq, and Skepta, alongside iconic fashion looks worn by Little Simz, Dame Shirley Bassey, Skin, and Sade.

Complementing the exhibition, the V&A East Museum will host events such as a talk on The Visual Cultures of Black British Music on April 23 and an experimental vocal performance by NYX on April 25, inviting visitors to sound the new museum into being.

Admission and Costs

Admission to the V&A East Museum is free, making it accessible to all. However, some exhibitions and events may require separate tickets. For the inaugural exhibition, weekday tickets are priced at £22.50, increasing to £24.50 on weekends. This pricing structure allows visitors to enjoy the museum's core offerings without cost while offering premium experiences for special displays.

The opening of the V&A East Museum is a milestone for London's cultural landscape, rooted in east London heritage and developed with input from young people. It promises to be a dynamic space for art, fashion, and history, enhancing the city's reputation as a global hub for museums and creative expression.
