Fans are expressing concerns about the future of the Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy-drama The Four Seasons following the exit of A-list star Steve Carell. The streaming service recently released the trailer for season 2, but many viewers are worried that the show won't be the same without him.
Steve Carell's Character Death Shakes Fans
In season 1, Carell's character Nick died in a car accident in the penultimate episode, with his funeral taking place in the finale. Some fans had hoped for flashbacks in season 2, but the trailer does not feature Carell, leading to disappointment.
On YouTube, @zamaqakaza6773 commented: 'So excited for season 2, I have been waiting. Sad about Steve Carell though.' Another user, @Awww_lena, wrote: 'The first one wasn't convincing. Without Carell for sure this one won't be either.' @guitreehill expressed concerns about how the show might handle Nick's memory: 'Ugh, they'll turn Nick into a martyr even though he was a selfish man in a midlife crisis.'
Critical and Audience Reception
Season 1 scored 78% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, with an audience rating of 63%. Despite mixed reviews, the series gained a strong following on social media. The eight-part show follows six lifelong friends across the four seasons, and season 2 will adopt a similar structure, with Nick's pregnant girlfriend Ginny (Erika Henningsen) taking his place.
Based on the 1981 film written by, directed by, and starring Alan Alda, the series became a hit for Netflix. The streaming giant quickly renewed it for a second season, which pleased many but also raised concerns.
Fan Reactions to Season 2 Announcement
When Netflix announced season 2 on X, @BradyConnolly44 shared: 'A domestic dramedy about a bunch of fifty-somethings reevaluating the states of their marriages? Loved every second. Perfect show, not one note.' @LukeCustardTV added: 'I thought it was a one-off but I loved spending time with these people so bring it on!' @WolfWithSadEyes compared it to another hit: 'Next season can be about a different family or group of friends or colleagues. This can be Netflix's lighter White Lotus.'
However, fears about Carell's absence persisted. In the promotional poster for season 2, Nick's face was hidden, hinting at his removal. @DonBishopXXX wrote: 'Nah we good. One season that's it – y'all ain't have to do Steve like that.' @DerVeivmeister begged for flashbacks: 'Lots of flash backs please! Steve is the GOAT!' @SuaveGuapo admitted: 'I don't know if it was because I was hungover but I almost cried the last couple episodes.'
What to Expect in Season 2
This season, the characters mourn their college friend and navigate a relationship with the younger woman he met after leaving his wife. They travel to Italy, discussing new beginnings as their friendships evolve. @Fashionita_133 on YouTube said: 'I've been waiting. The first season was so good.' @curtsmith3957 commented: 'Best ensemble cast, can't wait for this to drop.' Dr. Ashok Sharda wrote on X: 'Comfort show energy is back, and we're ready for the trip.'
Besides Carell and Tina Fey, the cast includes Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Marco Calvani. The Four Seasons returns to Netflix on May 28.
