Gender Imbalance in Ivor Novello Nominations Sparks Industry Concern
The 2026 Ivor Novello award nominations have unveiled a stark gender disparity within British and Irish songwriting, with male nominees outnumbering female nominees by more than two to one. This year's leading contenders include Olivia Dean, Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice, Jacob Alon, Self Esteem, and Kae Tempest, each securing two nominations. Notably, Tempest competes against himself in the best contemporary song category with tracks from his latest album.
Statistics Highlight a Troubling Trend
Out of 61 recognized songwriters and composers, 40 are men, 19 are women, and two identify as non-binary. This imbalance aligns with recent research from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which reported a decline in female songwriters on popular charts from 18.9% in 2024 to 14.5% in 2025. The Ivors, which celebrate exceptional craft and cultural impact, have positioned themselves as a defense of human creativity amid growing fears about AI's impact on musicians.
Key Categories and Notable Nominees
In the best album category, nominees range from breakthrough artists like CMAT to established names such as Lily Allen, whose album West End Girl marks her return after seven years. The best contemporary song category features Gorillaz and Little Simz, while the best song musically and lyrically includes Florence + the Machine and Sugababes. Coldplay's classic Viva la Vida earns a nomination for most performed work, reflecting its enduring popularity.
Challenges in Film and Television Scores
The best original film score category is entirely male, with Daniel Blumberg potentially adding to his Oscar win for The Brutalist. Similarly, the television soundtrack category sees Aaron May and David Ridley's work on Adolescence competing against scores by Sarah Warne and Gazelle Twin. These categories underscore the ongoing hurdles for female composers in screen music.
Awards Ceremony and Future Implications
The winners will be announced on 21 May in London, with additional awards like songwriter of the year to be presented. Last year's recipient, Charli xcx, was honored for her album Brat. As the music industry grapples with these disparities, the Ivors serve as a critical barometer for diversity and inclusion in songwriting.
