Kylie Minogue has officially been crowned the UK's Christmas queen for 2025, securing her first-ever festive number one single. The Australian pop icon, 57, has finally claimed the coveted seasonal top spot, ending the two-year reign of Wham!'s 'Last Christmas'.
A Festive Chart-Topper and a Potential Gay Anthem
The triumphant track is titled 'XMAS' – pronounced letter by letter as X-M-A-S. The song features a spelled-out dance sequence, suggesting it aims to become the next major gay anthem. It serves as the lead single from the updated edition of her holiday album, 'Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped)', released to mark the project's tenth anniversary.
This special edition is a veritable chocolate box of songs. It retains the original's highlights, including her legendary collaborations with Frank Sinatra and her sister Dannii Minogue, and adds four new tracks. Among these fresh additions is the energetic festive romp, 'XMAS'.
'Like Trying to Stop a Tidal Wave': Facing Mariah Carey
Speaking to Metro ahead of her chart victory, Kylie appeared unfazed by the intense Christmas race. When asked about competing with the perennial holiday powerhouse, Mariah Carey, her response was one of pure sincerity. 'That's like trying to stop a tidal wave,' she said. 'MC will always be Christmas. But hey, we'll see. It would make me feel like it's 1988 again, which would be a lot of fun.'
Another new track, 'Office Party', sees the star playfully imagining a regular 9-to-5 life, despite admitting she's never had a day job. She was quick to add, 'I haven't stopped working all my life.' These new songs are crafted as the perfect soundtrack for festive celebrations.
Glastonbury Dreams and 'Buckling the Buckle'
Beyond the Christmas charts, this success could pave the way for a return to Worthy Farm. Kylie delivered a legendary, career-defining performance in the Glastonbury 'Legends' slot in 2019, a debut that was 14 years overdue after a planned 2005 appearance was cancelled.
She hasn't ruled out another show, even suggesting she'd be open to headlining. 'I would say yes. 100 per cent,' she stated, regarding a potential 2027 booking (with 2026 being a fallow year for the festival). She reflected on her 2019 set as 'the gig of her life', noting that nothing in her career compared to it.
Recalling a phrase from a French ex-boyfriend, she smiled: 'To have an opportunity to really "Buckle the buckle"... I think he means to complete the circle. That would be amazing.' For now, fans can celebrate her festive chart triumph as 'Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped)' is available to stream and order.
