Kylie Minogue Claims First UK Christmas Number One, Making Chart History
Kylie Minogue secures historic UK Christmas number one

Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue has clinched a major career milestone, securing her very first UK Christmas number one single. Her festive track, titled 'XMAS', soared to the top of the Official Charts on Friday, 19 December 2025, ending a two-year reign for Wham!'s classic 'Last Christmas'.

A Historic Festive Achievement

The 57-year-old singer's victory marks a significant moment in UK chart history. According to data from The Official Charts Company, Minogue is now the first solo female artist in 12 years to claim the coveted Christmas number one spot. The last woman to achieve this was Sam Bailey with 'Skyscraper' back in 2013.

This landmark win further cements Minogue's legendary status, as she also becomes the first woman ever to have number one singles across four distinct decades. Her chart-topping journey began in the 1980s and has now continued into the 2020s.

Kylie's Joyful Reaction and Chart Rivals

Expressing her elation, Minogue stated it was "hard to put into words" how special the achievement felt. She called the honour "the most wonderful gift" and extended her gratitude to everyone who had listened to the song and shared "the love", wishing fans a very Merry Christmas.

Her single, pronounced X-M-A-S, is accompanied by a cheerful music video featuring Minogue teaching a dance routine to a group of children and adults. The video also includes a special cameo from Abba's Bjorn Ulvaeus.

The festive chart saw fierce competition from perennial favourites. Following Minogue's 'XMAS', the top five was completed by:

  • 2. Last Christmas by Wham!
  • 3. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey
  • 4. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
  • 5. Lullaby by Together For Palestine (this week's highest new entry)

Securing Her Place as a Chart Queen

This Christmas triumph adds an eighth number one to Kylie Minogue's impressive UK chart record. Her previous chart-toppers include timeless hits like 'I Should Be So Lucky' (1988), 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' (2001), and 'Slow' (2003).

Martin Talbot, Chief Executive of the Official Charts Company, suggested that with this win, Minogue could now be positioned to challenge Mariah Carey's title as the undisputed "queen of Christmas". He congratulated Kylie, calling her "our adopted national treasure".

The last Australian artist to secure a UK Christmas number one was Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, who collaborated with Robbie Williams on 'Somethin' Stupid' in 2001. Minogue's success continues her long-standing love affair with British music fans and adds a sparkling new chapter to her enduring career.
