MOBO 2026 Lifetime Achievement Winner Slick Rick's Surprising South London Origins
The MOBO Awards 2026 will feature a lifetime achievement winner and performer who defies common assumptions about his background. Contrary to popular belief that he is American, the iconic artist actually hails from South London, with a childhood story that shaped his legendary career.
From Mitcham to Manchester: A Musical Journey
The MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards ceremony takes place this evening, Thursday, March 26, at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester. This prestigious event recognizes excellence across multiple genres including hip hop, grime, UK Drill, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, and gospel. Last year's awards in Newcastle saw West London artists like Central Cee and Bashy claiming top honors, setting the stage for another competitive year.
Among this year's standout performers is Mitcham-born-and-raised Slick Rick, whose real name is Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters. The 61-year-old artist is instantly recognizable by his trademark eye-patch, which he has worn since childhood when he lost his right eye to a shard of glass. This distinctive feature has become synonymous with his persona in the music industry.
A Transatlantic Childhood: London to New York
Slick Rick spent his formative years in South London with his Jamaican family until age 11, when the family relocated to The Bronx, New York. The transition from London to New York in the 1970s presented significant challenges, as the city was far from the glamorous metropolis it is known as today. The area where the rapper settled was plagued by widespread drugs and crime, compounded by corruption within the New York Police Department at the time.
"If you were poor and coming up, you were pretty much [stuck]," Slick Rick revealed in an interview with The BBC. The family's living conditions were extremely cramped, with multiple family members sharing limited space. He drew a vivid comparison to popular culture, stating: "It reminds me of the beginning of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where he has two sets of grandparents all in one bed. We still had fun but when you look back, you say, 'Wow, that was a lot of us on one mattress.'"
