Peter Capaldi Questions Reality of Glastonbury Stage Appearance
For many festival-goers, Glastonbury is a hazy memory, but for actor Peter Capaldi, his surprise cameo on the Other Stage in 2025 felt entirely unreal. The Doctor Who icon recently confessed he still struggles to accept that his performance with indie rock band Franz Ferdinand actually happened, describing the experience as something that might have been "in his head."
A Surprise Collaboration Born From Musical Fandom
The unexpected collaboration unfolded when Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos teased that "a fellow Glaswegian" would join them on stage, referencing earlier rumors and gossip about special guests. Kapranos introduced the 68-year-old actor as "the original Capaldi," a playful nod to singer Lewis Capaldi's emotional return to the Pyramid Stage two years prior.
During an appearance on The One Show, Capaldi discussed the surreal moment with host Roman Kemp, who witnessed the cameo firsthand. "That's incredible, you were actually physically there, because I feel as if it's a dream," Capaldi quipped. "I feel as if it was in my head. You can tell me that it did actually happen. There I am, shades and everything."
The Rock Star Transformation
The actor made his entrance wearing a vibrant red shirt beneath a black suit, complemented by matching shoes and sunglasses, fully embracing the rock star aesthetic. The collaboration quickly became celebrated as one of the weekend's highlights, with Capaldi openly admitting his longstanding admiration for Franz Ferdinand's music.
Capaldi revealed the connection originated through his bass guitarist, who performs with him in what he describes as a "just for fun" band. This musician knew Franz Ferdinand's drummer, Audrey Tait, and had been encouraging their group to emulate the sound of the "Do You Want To" hitmakers. This enthusiasm alerted Tait to Capaldi's genuine fandom, ultimately leading to the invitation.
From Reluctance to Rock Anthem
Initially hesitant about the proposal, Capaldi questioned what he would perform, especially after noticing a track titled "The Doctor" on the band's new album. "I thought oh, it's going to be one of those things, there's going to be a tardis at the back, daleks will come out, I'll bring my own driver," he recalled. However, Kapranos clarified they wanted him to join them for "Take Me Out," their signature anthem that surpassed one billion streams on Spotify in January 2025.
Penned by Kapranos and former bandmate Nick McCarthy, this early 2000s classic continues to energize audiences, with the band noting they still relish "watching the crowd go mental" during performances. Franz Ferdinand are no strangers to Glastonbury, having first played there in 2009 before this recent Other Stage appearance.
A First-Time Festival Experience
Surprisingly, Capaldi had never visited Worthy Farm before this event, citing a specific reason for his avoidance. "I don't like the idea that you come to see a band and there's some guy with a rock chick on his shoulders and you can't see the band that you've paid to come see," he explained. Maintaining his characteristic cool demeanor, he mentioned staying for the afternoon but opting out of camping, reiterating that the entire experience felt "like a dream."
The actor's candid reflections highlight the magical, almost unbelievable nature of festival moments that transcend ordinary expectations, blending celebrity fandom with genuine musical passion in an unforgettable spectacle.
