Sara Cox will replace Scott Mills as the new host of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, the corporation has announced. Late last month, the radio presenter, 53, was fired from the national broadcaster following allegations over his personal conduct.
Cox Expresses Excitement Over New Role
The BBC announced that Cox, 51, will launch her first Breakfast Show this summer, although a firm date is yet to be revealed. She said of the announcement: There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I feel about being trusted with such an iconic show but let us start with ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed.
It has been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me. I have had the most glorious seven years of my career on Teatime so thank you to my brilliant Teatime listeners who hopefully will join me at Breakfast for excellent music and all my usual nonsense plus some superstar guests. I honestly cannot wait to wake the nation up with the biggest most fun breakfast show ever.
BBC Executive Praises Cox
Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, added: I am delighted that Sara Cox will be the new host of the prestigious Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Sara is adored by her millions of listeners at Teatime, and having regularly deputised in the slot, I already know she will build a brilliant rapport with the Breakfast audience and get the nation going each morning with her trademark warmth and humour.
She captured the hearts of the country last November, raising a staggering £11.5 million for Children in Need on her Great Northern Marathon Challenge and thoroughly deserves this gig. I cannot wait to hear her first show.
Background on the Appointment
Cox was rumoured to replace him after a source called her his heir apparent, but said the BBC were waiting for the dust to settle. An insider told The Sun previously: Since Scott left, she has been the name which has been discussed as the best candidate and everyone at Radio 2 is saying she will be offered it.
Sara has made a huge success of her drivetime slot and is hugely popular at the station, plus she has hosted the Breakfast Show as a stand-in before. The BBC will not be rushing this through as they want the dust to settle. But Sara is the one in line and, as far as her colleagues are concerned, she is the best person for the job.
Scott Mills Departure
Mills was abruptly removed from his role at the BBC ahead of an alleged complaint about a historic police investigation into serious sexual offences against a boy under 16. It was just last year that he took over hosting the Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball, who stepped away to spend more time with her family. Before being sacked, Mills was one of the highest-paid presenters at the BBC, with his salary being between £315,000 and £319,999 in 2024.
