Two Door Cinema Club will play their sold-out show at Crystal Palace Park today (Friday, June 26) despite London entering a third day of a red-alert heatwave, leading to fan backlash and refund demands.
Band confirms show amid weather warning
The Northern Irish rockers are headlining the outdoor gig to mark the 15th anniversary of their debut album Tourist History, performing the album in full alongside other hits. They will be joined by special guests The Vaccines, alt-pop artist James Marriott, and indie rock band The Royston Club.
As Two Door Cinema Club posted on Instagram to confirm the concert, many fans expressed worries about the red weather warning and lack of shade in the park. Some commented asking if they could get refunds despite the show proceeding.
Fan anger and support
One angry fan wrote: "Thanks for prioritising profit and ticket sales over the safety of fans. I've actually been a fan since 2008, seen you guys on every tour, but so disheartening you're choosing to go ahead with an event that is going to be chaotic and unsafe."
A second posted: "Train cancelled and too risky for me with my heart condition/medications. Absolutely gutted to be missing it." A third opined: "I hope I can stay alive for tomorrow."
But many fans defended the show. One person wrote: "Actually so buzzing for tomorrow." Another added: "Some people in this comment section need a reality check. The festival holders themselves aren’t going to cancel the gig, bruise their reputation and lose out on massive amounts of profit because of the sun. It’s a shame if people can’t make it but protect yourself and it shouldn’t be an issue whatsoever. Don’t take it out on the band."
Safety measures announced
Announcing the event will go ahead as planned, organisers Festival Republic stated: "We are aware of the forecast high temperatures this weekend and the event will be going ahead as planned.
"To help everyone stay safe and comfortable, we've introduced a range of hot weather measures including a significant amount of refill taps across the arena in four separate locations, a misting station and enhanced welfare provision. Customers may also bring up to 1l of sealed water and sunscreen up to 250ml.
"Please note that shade is limited across the site, so we strongly encourage everyone to wear suitable sun protection, including sunscreen, hats and lightweight clothing, and to stay hydrated throughout the day. Small foldable umbrellas are permitted into the event.
"Please look after yourself and those around you, take breaks when needed and don't hesitate to seek assistance if you're feeling unwell. Our welfare and medical teams will be available throughout the event to provide support if required."
