For decades, horror and comedy have often been described as two sides of the same coin. Both genres aim to elicit visceral reactions from audiences, whether through laughter or fear. However, balancing the two is no easy feat. Yet, following the release of the first two episodes of Apple TV's horror-comedy series Widow's Bay, starring Matthew Rhys, fans are hailing it as 'one of the most unexpected' successes of the year.
A Perfect Blend of Horror and Humor
Described as a mix of Stephen King and Parks and Recreation—the latter connection makes sense as the creator, Katie Dippold, also wrote for the American mockumentary sitcom—the 10-part series currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show is co-directed by Hiro Murai (Atlanta) and Ti West (Pearl).
Fans have taken to social media to praise the series. Mandolyn wrote on X: 'Watched the first 2 episodes of Apple's Widow's Bay and it is delightful. Perfect blend of creepy, superstitious, seafaring town with lots of comedy. One part in ep 2 was particularly terrifying to me for no reason, really well shot.'
Shura added: 'The series is awesome so far, and the cinematography and colors are a masterpiece.' Aziz commented: 'I liked the atmosphere and the psychological horror too, as well as the camera angles and colors. The touch of comedy is perfect.'
What the Critics Say
Metro's TV reporter Milo Pope awarded the series four stars out of five, stating: 'If you value your sleep, do not watch Apple TV's latest horror series.' He described it as 'a great start to a series I've been waiting for for a long time, the first two episodes are beautiful.'
Other viewers shared their reactions. Omar tweeted: 'Ain't no way I'm sleeping tonight, what did I get myself into?' Carey simply declared: 'I love Widow's Bay so much.'
Plot and Cast
Set on an island off the coast of New England, Widow's Bay follows town mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) as he attempts to revive his struggling community by drawing tourists. However, it soon becomes apparent that the town's superstitions are true—the island is cursed. Alongside Rhys, the cast includes Stephen Root as local skeptic Wyck, Kate O'Flynn as Tom's bizarre assistant, Kingston Rumi, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.
The official synopsis reads: 'The mayor of a New England town resolves to turn it into the next tourist hot spot, despite local warnings that it's cursed.'
Matthew Rhys on the Series
Speaking to Metro last week, Rhys said: 'We all jumped at the scripts. It felt like a very real world. It was very detailed and intricate. I had a few episodes towards the end, when reading them, I would make an involuntary noise. I sincerely hope the audience has the same reaction.'
The third episode of Widow's Bay airs on Apple TV on Wednesday.
