In a major boost for South London's entertainment scene, the iconic Peckham Palais has been meticulously revived and transformed back into a bustling nightclub, ending a 15-year vacancy. Located on Rye Lane, this legendary venue now boasts a multi-room setup, including a 470-capacity basement club and an upstairs bar inspired by the 1970s, offering a fresh yet nostalgic experience for party-goers.

Upon entering the building, visitors are greeted by a ground-floor lobby and box office, where peeling plaster and chipped paint intentionally hint at the venue's rich history. The first floor has been converted into The Ballroom, a cocktail bar and events space accommodating up to 250 people. This area exudes strong 70s vibes with raspberry-pink walls, leather and PVC booth-style seating, and oak details, creating a classy and civilised atmosphere for sipping cocktails and enjoying vinyl records.
For those seeking a more energetic night out, descending into the basement reveals a high-capacity nightclub designed with precision acoustics. The Night Group, in collaboration with architects Nikjoo, has outfitted the subterranean space with a bespoke five-way Funktion-One sound system and advanced acoustic treatments, ensuring an immersive audio experience for up to 470 guests.
Preserving History While Embracing Modernity
The building housing Peckham Palais originally opened in 1867 as the Jones and Higgins department store, operating until 1980. Part of it was later demolished for the Aylesham Shopping Centre, while the remaining section became the original Palais nightclub, which closed in 2011. Over the years, multiple proposals to relaunch the venue fell through until the Night Group, known for east London spots like Night Tales and Netil360, stepped in.
Designers have carefully preserved elements of the venue's past, such as graffiti on windows and patinated textures, to maintain its historical connection. Annie Harrison, founder of Fare Inc, which assisted in the redesign, stated, 'Our approach was not to erase what had come before, but to work with it, to preserve the details people feel connected to and allow the building's history to remain visible. We wanted Palais to feel like it had always been here; layered, atmospheric and alive again.'

Peckham Palais, situated at 1a Rye Lane (SE15 5EW), is now open from 11pm to 6am on Friday and Saturday nights. This revival adds to Peckham's vibrant nightlife lineup, which includes popular venues like The Carpet Shop, Jumbi, and The Greyhound. The reopening signals a growing trend in London's entertainment sector, with other recent announcements including a new 2,800-capacity venue in west London and a riverside project by the teams behind Printworks and Drumsheds.
