Elizabeth Sanjuan's Silent Snow: A Visual Journey into Hokkaido's White Wilderness
For half of each year, Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, is blanketed in snow, transformed by arctic winds and relentless snowstorms into a stark, monochrome landscape. Over four winters, photographer Elizabeth Sanjuan immersed herself in this harsh yet hauntingly beautiful environment, capturing its essence in her new book, Silent Snow. This collection of 40 images delves into a world where colour fades from memory, inviting viewers to experience the quiet, symbolic space of Hokkaido's snowy expanse.
The Challenge of Capturing White-on-White
Fellow photographer Sam Abell notes that Sanjuan explores the transformative effects of a landscape turned white for so long that recollections of other hues vanish. He poses a poignant question: "Was Hokkaido ever green? By midwinter, with months more snow to come, the answer cannot be yes." This limited tonal range presents a significant test for photographers, as they cannot rely on colour or even greyscale to carry the aesthetic weight of an image.
