Scottish Photographer's Smartphone Image Wins Prestigious Sony World Photography Award

Edinburgh-born photographer Robby Ogilvie has secured a major victory at the Sony World Photography Awards 2026, claiming the top prize in the Open Competition's Object category with a striking image titled "Colour Divides." The photograph was captured entirely on a Google Pixel 6 smartphone during a visit to Cape Town, South Africa.

The Award-Winning Moment in Bo-Kaap

Ogilvie took the image while exploring the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighborhood, famous for its brightly colored houses. "I'd spent the first week in and around Kruger National Park, photographing the culture, landscapes and wildlife, before moving on to Cape Town," Ogilvie explained. Accompanied by a South African friend, he immersed himself in the area's unique atmosphere.

"The area is known for its brightly colored houses, but it also carries a rich and complex history," Ogilvie noted. "There was a real feeling of community, and many of the houses felt like open studios; artists had taken over spaces to exhibit and sell their work."

The Iconic Ford Cortina That Made the Shot

The photograph's central subject is a sky-blue Ford Cortina parked against the backdrop of Bo-Kaap's colorful architecture. Ogilvie later discovered the vehicle is a local landmark affectionately known as "Cortie."

"As soon as I saw it, I knew the image," Ogilvie recalled. "I could see how it would sit within the frame and how the colours, the road and the deep uninterrupted blue of the sky, would hold the composition."

Reflections on Urban Division

Following the shoot, Ogilvie visited Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, which he described as "very different – modern and upscale." The contrast sparked deeper reflection. "Already I could get a sense of division within the city," he observed.

This theme directly influenced his choice of title. "In a country shaped by visible and invisible lines, it is difficult to ignore how space can both connect and separate," Ogilvie explained, highlighting the social and spatial divides the image subtly references.

Exhibition Details and Industry Recognition

The winning photograph will be featured in the Sony World Photography Awards 2026 exhibition at Somerset House in London, running from 17 April to 4 May. The achievement underscores the growing credibility of smartphone photography in professional competitions, demonstrating how accessible technology can produce award-winning art.

Ogilvie's success follows other notable phone photography features, such as Phil Stockbridge's acclaimed Los Angeles shot, further validating mobile devices as serious creative tools in contemporary photography.
