Elizabeth Dulau swaps Star Wars for George Eliot in Hampstead Theatre's 'Bird Grove'
Andor star Elizabeth Dulau to play George Eliot at Hampstead Theatre

Elizabeth Dulau, the British actor who captured audiences in the Star Wars series Andor, is set to take on one of literature's greatest figures on the London stage. She will portray the young Mary Ann Evans, who later became the famed novelist George Eliot, in the world premiere of Alexi Kaye Campbell's new play 'Bird Grove' at Hampstead Theatre.

From Galactic Spy to Literary Titan

Dulau rose to prominence playing the gutsy spy Kleya Marki in Tony Gilroy's critically acclaimed Disney+ series, Andor. While she had a smaller role in the first season, her part was significantly expanded for the nerve-wracking second series, cementing her status as a breakout star alongside established theatre actors like Denise Gough and Kyle Soller.

Prior to her television success, Dulau built her craft on stage with performances at venues including the Young Vic and Southwark Playhouse. Her casting as the lead in Bird Grove marks a major step into leading lady territory, with the respected off-West End venue providing an ideal platform for this new challenge.

Exploring a Father's Ambition

The play, directed by Anna Ledwich, focuses on a pivotal moment in the life of the future George Eliot. It dramatises the attempts of her father, Thomas Evans, to marry her off just as she stands on the brink of her literary career. The formidable Owen Teale will take on the role of Thomas, setting the stage for a compelling familial drama.

Bird Grove promises to explore the tensions between societal expectation and personal ambition, delving into the early life of a woman who would defy convention to become one of the Victorian era's most celebrated writers under a male pen name.

Dates and Details for Your Diary

The production is a significant addition to Hampstead Theatre's main house schedule. The world premiere run is strictly limited, with performances scheduled from 13 February to 21 March 2026.

This casting continues a strong trend of television talent transitioning to major stage roles in London, and positions Dulau as one of the most exciting young actors to watch in the UK theatre scene.
