Pioneering Irish Actor Michael Campbell Passes Away at Age 35

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Michael Campbell, the award-winning Belfast actor who died on Tuesday at the age of 35. The celebrated performer, who also went by the name Michael Patrick, passed away at NI Hospice surrounded by his loving family and friends after a courageous battle with motor neurone disease.

A Legacy of Groundbreaking Performances

Campbell secured one of Britain's most coveted theatrical honors for his legendary wheelchair-bound interpretation of Richard III. His recent stage work included the autobiographical play My Right Foot and The Tragedy of Richard II, with the latter earning him the prestigious Judges' Award at The Stage Awards held at London's Royal Opera House.

Speaking to BBC News NI about his acclaimed Richard III production, Campbell explained how he and co-writer Oisín Kearney reimagined the Shakespearean classic through the lens of terminal illness. "In Shakespeare's version, Richard III is deformed from birth," he told the broadcaster. "We changed it so that at the start of the play, Richard gets news that he's got a terminal illness, something like MND that's going to get worse."

He also shared his decision to decline a tracheostomy, preferring to spend his remaining time outside hospital walls.

His wife Naomi shared the news of his passing on social media, writing: "He lived a life as full as any human can live. Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life." She added: "Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger haired man."

A Versatile Career Across Multiple Mediums
