Nick Mohammed Announced as Host for 50th Olivier Awards Ceremony

Comedian and actor Nick Mohammed has been confirmed as the host for the upcoming Olivier awards, which will celebrate their 50th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall in London next month. The Ted Lasso star, who recently gained additional popularity as a finalist on Celebrity Traitors, expressed his excitement about taking on this prestigious role.

Following in Prestigious Footsteps

Mohammed will follow his Ted Lasso co-star Hannah Waddingham, who hosted the Oliviers in both 2023 and 2024. Last year's ceremony was co-hosted by Beverley Knight and Billy Porter, continuing the tradition of having prominent theatrical figures lead the event. The Olivier awards, established in 1976, recognize outstanding achievements across theatre, dance, and opera productions in London.

"To host the Oliviers in its 50th year is not only a dream come true but an absolute honour and privilege," Mohammed stated. "I love it not only for the breadth of theatrical talent it celebrates, but also for the extraordinary variety of live performances it showcases on the night itself."

Special Anniversary Awards Announced

The Society of London Theatre, which oversees the awards, has revealed several special recognitions for this milestone year:

  • Choreographer Wayne McGregor will receive an outstanding contribution to dance award
  • Soprano Danielle De Niese will be honored with an outstanding contribution to opera award
  • Industry recognition awards will go to children's playwright David Wood, Betty Laine (founder of Laine Theatre Arts college), and Linda Tolhurst (National Theatre stagedoor keeper for nearly 50 years)

Nominations for the competitive categories will be announced on Thursday, with winners selected by a panel of industry professionals, stage luminaries, and theatre-loving members of the public.

Mohammed's Theatrical Background and Promise

The comedian, known for his character Mr Swallow, referenced his memorable roller-skating performance at the 2024 Bafta awards, where he appeared in a sparkly dinner jacket. "While I will try to remain in the wings during these performances, I can't promise I won't be singing along in full voice," Mohammed joked. "But at least I won't be on roller skates this time."

Mohammed has previously performed on roller skates in his show The Very Best and Worst of Mr Swallow, demonstrating his comfort with physical comedy and theatrical presentation.

Ceremony Details and Broadcasting

The 50th Olivier awards ceremony is scheduled for April 12 at the Royal Albert Hall. The BBC will broadcast highlights that evening, though the network faces scrutiny following recent controversy surrounding its Bafta awards telecast. That broadcast edited out some tics from Tourette syndrome activist John Davidson while including him saying the N-word during a segment with actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo.

Alan Cumming, who presented the Baftas, criticized the production, stating it "should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma-triggering shitshow."

The Olivier awards represent the highest honors in British theatre, with this year's 50th anniversary edition promising to be particularly significant for London's cultural landscape.
