A secondary school in South Tyneside is in mourning today after a pupil died following a sudden medical emergency on site.

Emergency Response at Temple Park Road

The incident occurred at St Wilfrid’s RC College on Temple Park Road in South Shields. Emergency services were called at 9:17am on Wednesday, December 18, 2025.

A significant emergency response was dispatched to the scene. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it sent two ambulance crews, a critical care specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader. They were also supported by the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

School Community 'Deeply Saddened'

In a statement issued to parents and the school community, Headteacher Catherine Lennox confirmed the tragic outcome. She said the school had experienced a "medical episode" in the morning.

"Sadly, the student involved has passed away," Ms Lennox stated. "Our entire school community is deeply saddened, and we will continue to come together to support one another at this incredibly difficult time."

The headteacher added that the school's thoughts and prayers were with the pupil's family and all those affected by the loss.

School Closure and Call for Privacy

In response to the tragedy, St Wilfrid’s RC College was closed for the remainder of the day. Ms Lennox asked the local community to respect the privacy of the grieving family during this painful time and to "hold them in their thoughts and prayers."
