Man Arrested Following Alleged Burglary Attempt at Jewish Girls' School in North London
A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary after allegedly attempting to break into a Jewish all-girls school in North London. The incident occurred on Friday night at Bnos Zion (Bobov Senior Girls School) in Amhurst Park, Stamford Hill.
Volunteer Security Service Intervenes
Members of the Jewish volunteer security service, Shomrim, apprehended the man after he reportedly forced his way into the school premises. Footage shared by Shomrim on social media appears to show a man wearing a long red head scarf being led out of the building doorway, slowly placing his hands behind his head as two officers detained him.
The Shomrim volunteers promptly called the police, who responded from nearby Hackney Police station to arrest the suspect.
Context of Recent Tensions
This incident takes place less than two weeks after four vehicles from the Jewish volunteer ambulance service Hatzola were torched in an arson attack in Golders Green on March 23. Chief Inspector Steve Connolly, the Met's local policing lead for Hackney, addressed the ongoing concerns.
"At around 9.20pm on Friday, April 3, officers were called by Shomrim to a report of a burglary at a school in Amhurst Park, N16," Connolly stated. "Officers responded and a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He has since been bailed and the investigation is ongoing."
Connolly emphasized the police's commitment to community safety: "We know that concerns remain high – particularly for Jewish communities – and we continue to have an enhanced policing plan focused around vulnerable areas to protect communities, disrupt offenders and tackle crime."
About the School
According to Ofsted, Bnos Zion of Bobov School is a day school for girls of Orthodox Jewish faith. The school acquired the building on Amhurst Park in late 2023, having previously been solely based at Ravensdale Road in Hackney.
The school caters to girls aged three to 16 from the local Jewish Bobov community, where Yiddish is the first language for most members. Education at the school is based on the principles of the Torah, with pupils studying the religious curriculum in the morning followed by the regular curriculum in the afternoon.
The arrest highlights ongoing security challenges faced by Jewish institutions in London, with volunteer groups like Shomrim playing a crucial role in community protection. The investigation into the burglary attempt continues as authorities work to address broader safety concerns.
