The Met Office has officially named Storm Dave, the fourth major storm of the year, which is poised to unleash powerful winds and heavy snow over the Easter weekend. Weather warnings have been issued for multiple regions, including Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern England, with gusts potentially reaching up to 90mph in exposed coastal areas.
Widespread Wind and Snow Warnings in Effect
A yellow warning for wind will be active across affected areas, while a separate yellow warning for snow has been issued specifically for north-west Scotland from 3pm on Saturday to 3am on Sunday. Forecasters predict that heavy snow could accumulate up to 10-20cm in northern Scotland, particularly at elevations over 200 meters, leading to blizzard conditions when combined with the strong winds.
Tom Crabtree, the deputy chief forecaster, emphasized the severity of the situation: "Storm Dave will form and rapidly deepen on Saturday as it approaches the UK from the west. By Saturday afternoon, winds will strengthen significantly, with gusts of 60-70mph expected at times across parts of Scotland, and the potential for 80-90mph in exposed coastal locations. Gusts of 50-60mph are likely more widely in northern Britain."
