UK Weather: Temperatures Could Soar to 21C as Sunshine Arrives

The Met Office has indicated that temperatures could reach as high as 21C in certain regions of Britain on Wednesday, as south-easterly winds usher in warmer conditions across England and Wales. Forecasters are predicting warm and sunny weather for the southern parts of the country on both Wednesday and Thursday, while a weather front brings rain and cloud to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Warm Air Drawn from the South

According to the Met Office, the weather system will pull in warm air from the south and south-easterly direction, leading to a significant rise in temperatures on Wednesday. Highs of 22C have not been ruled out, potentially making Wednesday the warmest day of the year so far. These temperatures are notably higher than the typical averages for March.

Sky News weather presenter Jo Wheeler explained that high pressure developing to the east of the country is responsible for the soaring temperatures this week. She noted, "Drawing a warm south-easterly wind, sheltered parts of the west could see daytime highs of 20 or 21C today, which is significantly higher than expected at this time of year." She added that there will be plenty of sunshine in the forecast for the rest of the week, although temperatures will drop by a few degrees while remaining above average.

Regional Variations and Future Outlook

While the west experiences the highest temperatures, southern Scotland and north-eastern England will remain rather dull and cool with some patchy drizzle. Eastern coasts are expected to be more vulnerable to coastal cloud in the coming days. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill highlighted that the best of the sunshine, with almost wall-to-wall blue skies, will be across the bulk of England and Wales, contributing to the temperature rise.

In contrast, Scotland will see cooler temperatures on Wednesday, ranging between 11C and 13C, and Northern Ireland will experience highs of 10C to 11C. After a chilly start on Thursday, much of the UK will enjoy a warm and sunny day with light winds, though cloud will persist over Scotland and northern England.

Conditions are forecast to remain largely dry with some sunny spells on Friday and into the weekend, with some rain expected in Scotland on Saturday and Sunday. More unsettled conditions are set to return late on Sunday and into next week as an Atlantic frontal zone arrives in the UK.

Despite the warm days, nights will be chilly with frost and fog likely in some areas. As the weather pattern shifts, cloud chasing will become a more prominent feature of the forecast. A rain belt moving through on Sunday and Monday is likely to bring wintry showers back to the northern regions.
