Church Leaders Challenge GB News Owner Over Climate Statements and Investments
A group of over 100 church leaders, featuring former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and two current bishops, has publicly criticized Sir Paul Marshall, co-owner of GB News and a self-described "committed" Christian. The leaders have raised concerns about the television channel's persistent attacks on climate science and action, labeling some of Marshall's own statements as "misleading."
Allegations of "Climate Derangement Syndrome" and Financial Conflicts
Marshall recently claimed the UK suffers from "climate derangement syndrome," arguing that efforts to reduce planet-heating emissions are "impoverishing people." The Christian leaders have challenged this view, citing economic analyses that position decarbonization as a significant growth opportunity capable of saving trillions of dollars while enhancing public health and national security.
Furthermore, the group highlighted the approximately £1.8 billion in fossil fuel investments reportedly held by Marshall's hedge fund in 2023. They have called for greater transparency regarding any personal financial conflicts of interest when Marshall makes public statements on climate issues.
Marshall's Defense and Policy Stance
In response, Marshall acknowledged the Gospel's call to protect the vulnerable but criticized current UK net zero policies as "ideological" and a form of "unilateral economic disarmament." He expressed skepticism about the extent of human-caused global heating, stating it remains "subject to debate," despite scientific consensus attributing nearly all warming since 1950 to human activities.
Marshall emphasized his investments in renewable technology through his firm, Marshall Wace, but advocated for an "energy abundance" strategy combining renewables with oil and gas, opposing penalties on fossil fuels. He also distanced himself from GB News's editorial decisions, noting the channel's independent regulatory status.
GB News's Climate Coverage and Broader Context
The Christian leaders referenced research indicating GB News broadcast 953 attacks on climate science and action around the 2024 general election. Clare Fussell of Operation Noah, a signatory, urged media outlets to uphold responsible reporting standards, especially given global conflicts linked to fossil fuel dependence.
A GB News spokesperson defended the channel's journalism, emphasizing its commitment to open debate and regulatory compliance, while criticizing Operation Noah for not offering a right to reply.
Economic and Scientific Rebuttals
Contrary to Marshall's assertions, data shows the UK's net zero economy grew by 10% in 2024, and over 100 countries with net zero policies account for 82% of global emissions. The International Energy Agency reports that most new solar and wind projects are now cheaper than new fossil fuel plants, challenging the notion that renewables require subsidies while ignoring the trillions in subsidies benefiting fossil fuels.
The Lancet has published findings linking fossil fuel emissions to significant health impacts, including approximately one death per minute from climate-related causes, underscoring the urgency of the crisis addressed by the church leaders' letter.
