The Branch County Sheriff's Office confirmed that three people were killed and twelve others injured after an apparent tornado struck the Union Lake area. Approximately fifty miles southwest, Cass County officials reported one additional fatality and several injuries following a tornado that swept through the region. The National Weather Service confirmed at least one tornado near Union City in southern Michigan, with reports indicating the possibility of several others.
Videos circulating on social media, purportedly from the towns of Three Rivers and Union City, captured the terrifying moments as whirlwinds tore roofs from structures and scattered debris across neighborhoods. Footage revealed extensively battered buildings, overturned vehicles, and numerous trees and road signs that had been completely blown over by the ferocious winds.
Emergency Response Activated
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center on Friday to monitor the developing situation and coordinate response efforts. Clayton Cummins, a spokesperson for Michigan emergency services and police, stated that local response teams had been working diligently to address the devastation.
"It's sounding like the local response is and has been able to address what's been a very devastating afternoon and evening in southwest Michigan," Cummins remarked, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by first responders.

These destructive spring storms arrive near the beginning of what many meteorologists refer to as tornado season, a period typically marked by increased severe weather activity across the central and eastern United States. The Michigan tornado outbreak follows concerning weather patterns observed elsewhere, including footage from Thursday showing a first responder driving directly toward a storm near Fairview, Oklahoma, where lightning illuminated a large funnel cloud that appeared to reach the ground.
