Major Fire Incident at Erith Scrap Metal Recycling Yard
In the early hours of this morning, a significant fire broke out at a scrap metal recycling yard located on Manor Road in Erith, South East London. The blaze involved approximately 400 tonnes of scrap metal, prompting a large-scale emergency response from the London Fire Brigade.
Intensive Firefighting Efforts Deployed
Firefighters were first alerted to the incident just before 5am on March 28. The London Fire Brigade dispatched twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters from multiple stations, including Erith, Bexley, Plumstead, and Sidcup. Crews worked tirelessly for over five hours to bring the fire under control, achieving this by approximately 11:30am.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Arnold, who was present at the scene, provided details on the operation. "Crews worked hard throughout the morning to bring the fire at a scrap metal recycling yard under control," he stated. "One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as a water tower to tackle flames from height and one of the Brigade's fire boats was used to pump water from the Thames."
Specialized Equipment Utilized in Response
The firefighting operation employed advanced equipment to manage the challenging conditions. The turntable ladder served as a water tower, allowing firefighters to attack the flames from an elevated position. Additionally, a fire boat was deployed to draw water directly from the River Thames, ensuring a continuous supply for fire suppression efforts.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the site for several hours to monitor the situation and extinguish any remaining hotspots. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and will be subject to a thorough investigation by authorities.
Community and Environmental Impact
While there have been no immediate reports of injuries, the incident has raised concerns about potential environmental and safety impacts in the area. Scrap metal yards often contain hazardous materials that can pose risks when involved in fires. The scale of the blaze, involving 400 tonnes of waste, underscores the severity of the incident and the importance of effective emergency response protocols.
Local residents and businesses in Erith are advised to stay informed through official channels as the situation develops. The London Fire Brigade continues to assess the aftermath and ensure the site is fully secured.
