A cherished green space in east London is poised for a significant transformation after securing a major funding injection. Forest Lane Park in Forest Gate, Newham, has been awarded a grant of £904,141 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to finance a comprehensive restoration project.
A Major Investment for Community Green Space
The funding decision, formally accepted by Newham Council on Tuesday 6th January, marks a pivotal moment for the well-used park. This substantial award builds upon an earlier grant of £83,000 provided in 2023, which was used to develop the detailed restoration plans. The council has also committed to adding £173,729 from its own budgets, bringing the total project investment to well over £1 million.
The plans approved by council leaders outline a wide-ranging set of improvements designed to benefit the entire community. The core focus will be on restoring the park's basic infrastructure, which includes renewing footpaths, updating signage and interpretation boards, and replacing street furniture.
Enhancing Facilities and Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour
A key component of the project is the overhaul of recreational facilities. The existing play equipment will be either replaced or upgraded, and new outdoor fitness equipment will be installed, catering to both children and adults seeking active leisure options.
Council officials have also highlighted that the investment will directly address community concerns. New park entrances will be created, specifically designed to help deter anti-social behaviour that has previously discouraged some residents from using the space. This move aims to make the park more welcoming and secure for everyone.
Environmental and historical features will also see considerable attention. The park's lake and dipping pond will be restored through work such as repairing eroded banks and thinning overgrown vegetation. In a unique touch, new solar-powered "listening posts" will be installed. These will play oral history recordings from local community members, including those from the Hibiscus Community Centre and people with connections to the former maternity hospital that once stood in the park's Industrial School building.
