Historic South London Lido Secured as Council Steps In Following Operator Administration
The future of a beloved South London outdoor swimming pool has been guaranteed just in time for the summer season, following the collapse of its current operator. Lambeth Council has announced that Brockwell Lido, located near Brixton and Herne Hill, will transition to direct council management starting July 1.
Council Intervention Ensures Continuity
This decisive move comes after operator Fusion Lifestyle entered administration on April 1, following an extended period of financial instability. The organization, which manages leisure facilities nationwide, had been engaged in discussions with Lambeth Council regarding the preservation of what they described as a "highly-valued community facility."
The council confirmed that the entire site—including the outdoor pool, gym, and café—will be operated through its in-house leisure service, Active Lambeth. This intervention follows weeks of growing uncertainty about the lido's fate, during which community members formed a charity to help secure its long-term survival.
Community Concerns and Council Assurance
At a well-attended public meeting, Lambeth Council officials assured residents that closure was not an option and that they were prepared to assume control if necessary. Local publication Brixton Buzz reported that campaigners had expressed concerns about significant investment needs due to years of inadequate maintenance at the popular facility.
Lambeth Council stated that taking direct management responsibility would safeguard the lido's long-term future while maintaining public access and ensuring service continuity. The council emphasized that existing memberships would remain valid, with detailed information to be shared with members before the July 1 transition.
Expanded Leisure Opportunities
Once the transfer is complete, Brockwell Lido will become integrated into the broader Active Lambeth network, providing users with access to a wider range of leisure activities across the borough. The council has committed to minimizing disruption for both staff and members during the transition period.
Nearly a Century of Community Service
Brockwell Lido has been a cherished South London institution for almost one hundred years. The outdoor pool originally opened in 1937 as part of Lambeth's initiative to provide modern recreational facilities for local residents, quickly establishing itself as a favored summer destination.
The council's proactive approach ensures this historic community asset will continue serving generations to come, preserving both its architectural heritage and its role as a vital social hub during the warmer months.
