Ilford Hay Barn Engulfed in Massive Blaze, Horses Rescued by Firefighters
A dramatic fire tore through a hay barn in Ilford, east London, on Sunday evening, sending huge flames and smoke into the sky as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze and rescue three horses from the property.
Swift Response Saves Animals
The incident began at 7:55 PM on March 22, when the barn on Painters Road caught fire. London Fire Brigade immediately dispatched approximately 60 firefighters from multiple stations, including Hainault, Ilford, Dagenham, Romford, Harold Hill, and Barking.
Fire crews supported the owners in safely leading three horses to a secure location, with the animals fortunately sustaining no injuries during the emergency. The rapid response was crucial in preventing harm to the livestock.
Intense Firefighting Efforts
As the hay ignited, roaring flames engulfed the open-sided barn, which featured a corrugated iron roof. The structure was largely destroyed by the intense heat and fire.
Firefighters employed advanced equipment to tackle the blaze, including a 32-metre turntable ladder used as a water tower to attack flames from above. A drone was also deployed to provide live images and thermal imagery, aiding in surveying the incident from the air.
By 10:30 PM, the fire was brought under control, though crews remained on scene throughout the night to damp down hotspots and monitor the area.
Road Closures and Investigation
Hainault Road was closed for an extended period as fire crews worked to contain the blaze, with Station Commander Stephen Irvine advising motorists to avoid the area. He noted that the incident was expected to be protracted, with firefighters staying overnight.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with authorities working to determine what sparked the destructive blaze that required such a significant emergency response.
