After the festive indulgence of Christmas Day, a brisk walk is the perfect remedy. While London boasts famous green spaces like Hyde Park, one East London gem offers an idyllic and surprisingly cosmopolitan backdrop for your Boxing Day ramble.
An Urban Oasis with a New York Feel
Victoria Park has earned comparisons to New York City's Central Park, described by Culture Whisper as "distinctly New York City". This vast urban sanctuary features sweeping, tree-lined avenues that welcome a lively mix of cyclists, skaters, and pedestrians, creating a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of its celebrated American counterpart.
The park is a particular hub for roller skating, with frequent lessons organised for beginners. It's also a popular gathering spot for dog walkers, making it perfect for exercising pets or simply enjoying the sight of playful pups.
Historic Landmarks and Manicured Gardens
Beyond its green expanses, Victoria Park is rich with history and unique features. A standout is the striking Chinese pagoda located near one of the park's bridges. Originally built in 1842 as an entrance for a Chinese Exhibition, it found a permanent home in the park. Sadly destroyed during the Blitz in 1956, it was faithfully reconstructed after Tower Hamlets received funding in 2010, and today its brilliant colours are a major draw for visitors.
The park also hosts beautifully kept gardens, including the serene English Rose Garden, a paved sanctuary filled with an array of roses – though a spring visit is needed to see them in full bloom. Other attractions include playgrounds, several lakes, and a war memorial.
The Enchanting Baroness Burdett Coutts Fountain
One of the park's most captivating features is the Grade II*-listed Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain. Erected in 1862 at a cost of £5,000 – roughly £718,500 in today's money – this ornate structure sits within its own gated area, adorned with golden decorations and intricate carvings. Expertly restored in 2011, it remains a breathtaking focal point.

No Boxing Day walk is complete without refreshments. Within the park, the Pavilion Cafe offers a menu spanning English and Sri Lankan breakfasts, lunches, brunches, baked goods, and hot drinks. Alternatively, The Hub serves similar fare, plus a broad selection of hot drinks and a counter typically laden with cakes and sausage rolls. Do check their opening times over the bank holiday before you visit.
Victoria Park is easily accessible by public transport. You can take the Overground to Hackney Wick or Cambridge Heath stations, or the Central line to Bethnal Green, each followed by just a short walk to the park's gates.
