Residents in Lewisham are being advised of important changes to their regular waste and recycling collection schedules due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year bank holidays.
The council has confirmed that from Monday, December 22, some collections will be delayed by one or two days. It is crucial for households to note the revised dates to ensure their bins are put out on time and to avoid any missed collections during the festive period.
Revised Bin Collection Dates for Lewisham
The changes are specific to collection days that fall on bank holidays. There will be no changes for collections scheduled on December 22 or December 23; these will be collected as normal.
For those whose usual collection is on Christmas Day (December 25), the service will now take place on Friday, December 27.
If your bin day is Boxing Day (December 26), your collection is rescheduled for Saturday, December 28.
Collections on December 29 and 30 remain unchanged and will proceed on the usual days.
The adjustments continue into the New Year. A collection due on New Year's Day (January 1) will happen on Thursday, January 2 instead.
Similarly, a January 2 collection is moved to Friday, January 3.
Normal service for all households will resume from Monday, January 5.
How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Lewisham
Once the festivities are over, Lewisham Council provides clear options for disposing of your Christmas tree responsibly.
Real trees can be recycled using your garden waste bin, provided you cut the tree into pieces no larger than 10cm thick and 50cm long.
Alternatively, you can take your real tree to a designated council collection point. For artificial trees, the council suggests donating usable ones to a charity shop.
If an artificial tree is broken and beyond use, it can be disposed of at the Landmann Way Reuse and Recycling Centre in New Cross.
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and familiarise themselves with the new timetable to ensure a smooth waste collection service throughout the holidays and to help the borough recycle effectively.
