Human Remains Discovered in Remote Tasmanian Wilderness Search
Human remains have been located in a remote area of Tasmania during the ongoing search for Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer, who disappeared more than two years ago. The discovery was made by a dedicated bushwalker involved in the extensive volunteer efforts to find the missing tourist.
Discovery Near Philosopher Falls
The remains were found in the Philosopher Falls area near Cradle Mountain in Tasmania's northwest, where Cremer was last seen on June 17, 2023. The 31-year-old Belgian national had reportedly set off on a walk in the region, with her vehicle discovered in the falls car park the day after her family reported her missing on June 26.
Inspector Andrew Hanson confirmed that Cremer's family in Belgium has been informed of the development. "While forensic testing is yet to be completed, a pathologist has reviewed images and confirmed the remains are human," Hanson stated. Police from the Western District, along with specialist forensic personnel, have attended the scene following the discovery.
Extended Search Efforts
The initial search operation, which began in June 2023, involved:
- Police and State Emergency Service ground crews
- Specialist swift water rescue personnel
- Drone surveillance and helicopter support
- Cadaver dog deployments in areas of interest
This search was suspended on July 10, 2023, after experts concluded Cremer could not have survived the severe weather conditions. However, volunteer efforts continued, with a privately led renewed search beginning in December 2025 that resulted in the discovery of Cremer's mobile phone in the Philosopher Falls area.
Community Support and Investigation
Inspector Hanson acknowledged the distressing nature of this discovery for Cremer's loved ones, while emphasising the dedication of search volunteers. "The person who located these remains has been dedicated to searching for Celine for some time, and their continued efforts and that of other volunteer search parties reflects the strong community support behind this matter," he said.
Police have stressed that formal forensic analysis must be completed before any determination can be made regarding whether the remains belong to Celine Cremer. The investigation continues as authorities work to provide answers in this prolonged missing person case that has captured international attention.
