Urgent Product Recall Issued for Three Stretchy Sand Toys Over Asbestos Contamination Concerns
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued an urgent recall for three specific stretchy toys filled with sand, warning parents and consumers that these products may be contaminated with asbestos, posing a serious health risk. The recall affects the HGL Stretchy Sand Monster Truck, the Scrunchems Stretchies Sleepy Dino Toy, and the HGL Stretchy Sand Pig, all of which have been immediately withdrawn from sale.
Immediate Health Risk Identified by Safety Regulator
Official notices published on the OPSS website explicitly state that these toys could present a "risk to health" due to possible contamination with a "small quantity" of asbestos, a prohibited and hazardous substance. All three products are believed to have originated in China and were distributed within the UK market by One For Fun Limited. Asbestos exposure is a known cause of mesothelioma, a severe and often fatal cancer that develops in the tissue lining surrounding the lungs.
Critical Safety Instructions for Consumers
The regulator has issued strict, step-by-step guidance for consumers who own any of these recalled toys. Owners are instructed to cease using the products immediately and ensure they are kept completely out of reach of children. For undamaged toys, the safe disposal protocol involves:
- Placing the toy inside a heavy-duty plastic bag.
- Securely sealing the bag with double tape.
- Clearly labeling the bag and storing it in a secure location inaccessible to children.
If a toy is damaged and the internal sand is accessible, the OPSS advises extreme caution. The cleanup procedure requires wearing protective gloves and a mask. Any area where the product was used should be cleaned with wet cloths. All contaminated materials, including the sand, gloves, mask, and cloths, must then be double-bagged for disposal. The area must be kept clear of children and others until fully cleaned. The final step is to discard the sealed bags in standard household waste or return them to a designated retailer.
Manufacturer's Response and Market Withdrawal
One For Fun Limited has confirmed the full withdrawal of these products from the market and initiated a consumer recall. In an official statement provided to the Press Association, David Mordecai, Chief Executive of One for Fun, addressed the situation. He cited recent global reports concerning trace asbestos found in sand used in various consumer products, which has impacted numerous toy companies worldwide. As a precautionary measure, the company conducted independent testing on its entire range of sand-filled items.
The statement confirmed that while current European toy safety standards (EN71) do not mandate asbestos testing, their investigation identified trace contamination in these three specific products. "We take product safety extremely seriously," Mordecai stated. As a direct result of this incident, the company has discontinued the use of sand as a filler material in all current and future products, reaffirming its commitment to the highest safety standards through ongoing monitoring and review of materials and manufacturing processes.
