In a real-life scene reminiscent of the classic film Home Alone, a 12-year-old boy's quick thinking prevented a Christmas burglary at his family home.
A Shattered Window and a Swift Escape
The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Medford, New York. Tristan Taylor was alone in the house when he heard the alarming sound of his kitchen window breaking. This was swiftly followed by the unmistakable noise of footsteps moving through the property.
Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, Tristan did not confront the intruder. Instead, he focused on getting to safety. He climbed out through his bedroom window to escape the house.
Calm Under Pressure: The 911 Call
Once outside and at a safe distance, the boy managed to spot the alleged intruder from his vantage point. He immediately called emergency services.
"I said, 'I have to get out the house, the quickest way possible'," Tristan later told CBS New York. "I was on the phone with 911, waiting for them to get here."
His grandmother, Timothea Taylor, expressed immense pride in her grandson's actions. "We were very proud that he was able to keep his composure and call the police as quickly as he did," she said. "Without even thinking about it, he automatically called 911."
Community Reaction and Legal Consequences
The family's neighbour, Mike Campanella, praised Tristan's brave response. "I would hope my son would have done the same thing," Campanella stated. "When someone is breaking into the house, caution is to get out and call the police. You just have to be brave and call them."
Police responded to Tristan's call and arrested Christian Garcia, 53, at the scene. Garcia has been charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglars' tools. He has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
This festive season incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of home security awareness and the value of staying calm in a crisis, regardless of age.
