Child dies in Kent house fire, investigation ongoing

A child has tragically died and another has been hospitalised following a severe house fire in the village of Hamstreet, Kent.

Emergency Response to the Blaze

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was called to the property near Ashford on Sunday 28 December 2025 after reports of an intense fire. The service deployed a significant emergency response, sending six fire engines and a height vehicle to tackle the flames which had spread throughout the home.

Due to heavy smoke, residents and travellers in the vicinity were initially advised to close their windows and doors and stay away from the area. This precaution has since been lifted.

Ongoing Dampening Down and Investigation

As of the latest updates, two fire engines and crews remain at the scene to carry out dampening down operations, ensuring all hot spots are fully extinguished.

KFRS Chief Executive Ann Millington expressed the service's profound sorrow, stating: "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by this tragic incident, especially the child's loved ones."

Cause of the Fire Remains Unknown

An official investigation into the origin and cause of the devastating fire is now underway. Authorities have not yet released any details regarding what may have sparked the blaze.

The second child taken to hospital is currently receiving medical treatment, with their condition not yet publicly known.
