Children were seen cowering on a narrow ledge as thick smoke billowed from a fire that swept through an elementary school in Tokyo on Friday. The blaze erupted around 11 a.m. in the music room on the fourth floor of Takinogawa Daisan Elementary School in the northern part of the city, forcing around 300 students and staff to flee.
Dramatic Rescue Operation
Video footage captured the harrowing moments when pupils huddled on an external ledge while firefighters battled the flames. Emergency crews managed to rescue a teacher and several children, some of whom were treated for smoke inhalation. According to local authorities, approximately 10 people sustained injuries, but none were life-threatening.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Reports from The Japan Times indicate that a burning smell was detected coming from a room used to store musical instruments. It is believed a class was in session in the music room when the fire started.
Firefighters swiftly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building. The school has been closed temporarily as officials assess the damage and continue their inquiry.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions about fire safety protocols in Japanese schools, with calls for stricter regulations and more frequent drills.
