Child's 999 Call Saves Mum After Brain Bleed Collapse

Six-Year-Old's Quick Thinking Saves Mother's Life During Medical Emergency

In a remarkable display of courage and composure, a six-year-old girl from Croydon became a lifesaver when her mother collapsed at their home last summer. Pearl, who was just six years old at the time, dialled 999 when her mother Carole suffered a seizure and lost consciousness due to a life-threatening brain bleed.

Calm Under Pressure During Terrifying Situation

Carole, 36, was alone with her two daughters Pearl and four-year-old Amelia when the medical emergency occurred. Despite the frightening circumstances, Pearl immediately called emergency services and provided clear, detailed information to call handler Gen Hinds.

"She's lying on the sofa... she's not awake. Her eyes keep on opening and closing," Pearl calmly reported during the emergency call. She accurately described her mother's symptoms, including foaming at the mouth and shaking, and provided their home address when requested.

At one point during the call, Pearl admitted "I'm really, really scared," to which operator Gen Hinds reassured her: "Don't be scared, we are coming."

Emergency Response and Medical Treatment

Following instructions from the emergency operator, Pearl checked her mother's breathing and confirmed that her chest was rising and falling. Within minutes, paramedic Charlotte Aisbitt arrived in a fast response vehicle, followed shortly by an ambulance crew.

Paramedic Charlotte later praised the sisters' remarkable composure: "They were incredible – they saved their mum's life. Even though it must have been frightening, they stayed calm and really helped me."

Carole was transported to hospital where she received treatment for the brain bleed and has since made a complete recovery.

Recognition for Extraordinary Bravery

To honour their exceptional bravery, Pearl and Amelia were invited to meet the emergency teams who assisted them. Paramedic Charlotte and operator Gen personally presented the sisters with commendation certificates and gave them a tour of an ambulance, demonstrating some of the life-saving equipment used by emergency responders.

Carole expressed her overwhelming pride in her daughters: "I am so happy and so proud. I think this is the proudest day of my life. You don't know how a child will cope in an emergency, but Pearl was amazing."

Importance of Emergency Preparedness

London Ambulance Service Director of 999 operations Stuart Crichton emphasized the significance of Pearl's actions: "Pearl did absolutely brilliantly in a terrifying situation – she stayed calm, gave clear information, and helped get lifesaving care on the way. Teaching your child how to call 999 could save a life."

The incident highlights the critical importance of emergency preparedness, even for young children. Pearl's remarkable response demonstrates how children can be taught to handle emergency situations effectively when provided with proper guidance and education about emergency procedures.
