A 90-year-old former firefighter experienced the surprise of a lifetime at his birthday party when he was reunited with the woman whose life he saved as a baby 40 years ago.
The Dramatic Rescue in Blackpool
The heartwarming story began in 1986 in Blackpool, when then-sub officer Brian Passmore bravely helped rescue a baby girl, Carly Holden, from a burning home. The fire had started in a lower-ground apartment, trapping Carly and her mother, Cathy, in their top-floor flat.
Brian, who served with the Lancashire Fire Service for over 25 years before retiring in 1988 due to a back injury, often reflected on that day. He had wondered for decades about the little girl's fate.
A 90th Birthday Surprise Decades in the Making
For his milestone 90th birthday, Brian's daughter, Julie Henderson, led him to believe they were going for a quiet lunch. Instead, he walked into a room full of friends and family for a surprise party.
The biggest shock was the presence of Carly Holden, now a mother-of-five living in Blackpool. She had meticulously kept a memory box of newspaper cuttings about the rescue all these years but had never met her hero until that moment.
"It was a total surprise and dad was absolutely delighted," Julie said. "He has often said that saving baby Carly that day was the highlight of his firefighting career."

"It was wonderful to meet Brian and share in his 90th birthday celebrations," Carly said after the emotional reunion. Julie had tracked her down via social media after Brian, during a period of ill health the previous year, expressed a wish to know what had become of the child he saved.
