Five emergency workers hit by van in Essex, three arrested

Five emergency service workers were injured, two of them seriously, after being struck by a van while responding to a separate road traffic collision in Essex in the early hours of this morning.

Early Morning Collision on A130

The incident began just after midnight on Friday, January 10, 2026. A Nissan X-Trail had been involved in a crash on the A130. Off-duty police officers and passing paramedics stopped at the scene to offer assistance to those involved.

While they were dealing with the initial crash, a white Ford Transit van collided with the group at the roadside, according to a statement released by Essex Police. The force confirmed that three police officers and two ambulance service paramedics were hurt in the second collision.

Three Men in Custody Following Arrests

Essex Police swiftly arrested three men in connection with the serious incident. A 23-year-old man from Canvey Island was detained on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

A second suspect, a 29-year-old man from Westcliff, was arrested on similar charges, with additional suspicion of possession of a Class B or C drug and being in charge of a vehicle while unfit.

A 39-year-old man, also from Canvey Island, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit. All three remain in police custody as inquiries continue at pace.

Police Appeal for Information and Footage

Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin expressed that the thoughts of everyone at Essex Police were with the injured emergency workers and their families, who are being supported by the force.

He stressed the investigation is active and urged the public not to speculate. “If the public have any information – or crucially dashcam footage of the vehicles involved – that they believe will assist our investigation, please get in touch,” he stated.

The police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the events or captured them on camera, to help establish the full facts of both collisions.
