Off-Duty Met Police Officer Leaps Into Freezing River to Save Vulnerable Woman

A Metropolitan Police officer has been hailed for his selfless actions after jumping into a freezing river to rescue a vulnerable woman who had fallen from a bridge. PC Adam Darlow was returning home from a night shift on March 7, 2025, when he witnessed the incident that would lead to what colleagues describe as a life-saving intervention.

The Moment of Crisis on the River Kennet

PC Darlow was crossing the River Kennet in Reading by bus when he noticed a woman wearing only a dressing gown standing at the edge of the bridge. Despite the bitterly cold weather, she removed her robe before looking up at the sky and falling forward into the dark waters below.

"Then she just looked up at the sky and fell forwards into the river and disappeared from view," PC Darlow recalled. "I said to the bus driver: 'Please let me off now, somebody has just thrown themselves into the river.'"

As he stepped off the bus, the officer immediately dialed 999 to alert emergency services before scanning the river. The woman had completely disappeared beneath the surface, creating a race against time to locate her.

The Dramatic Rescue Operation

After spotting the woman reappear some distance away, appearing unconscious in the water, PC Darlow sprang into action. He ran along the towpath until he reached her location and enlisted a member of the public to retrieve a lifebuoy from the riverbank. When throwing the buoy failed to elicit a response, he knew more drastic measures were necessary.

"I thought, I need to save this person's life," PC Darlow explained. "I'm a police officer; it's my core responsibility to protect people's lives, regardless of how dangerous it is. It's what I do and I have to do it."

As uniformed officers arrived at the scene, PC Darlow climbed down a ladder into the "dark and cold" river with assistance from a passerby who offered their walking stick to aid the rescue effort.

Successful Extraction and Aftermath

The officer managed to hook the woman and pull her toward him, though she remained incoherent throughout the ordeal. With remarkable presence of mind, PC Darlow positioned himself underneath the woman and pushed her up out of the water where colleagues could pull her to safety.

"I was numb, it was freezing," he described. "I couldn't feel my legs, and thought, 'Am I going to be able to get out now?' But as I started moving, adrenaline kicked in."

Paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly afterward to provide first aid, and thankfully, the woman survived the traumatic incident. The successful outcome has been attributed directly to PC Darlow's quick thinking and courageous actions.

Recognition and Praise from Colleagues

PC Darlow has now been awarded a prestigious London Police Bravery Award for his heroic efforts, with the ceremony scheduled for the following Thursday. Reflecting on the honor, he emphasized the importance of recognizing such acts within the police force.

"I think it's something that needs to be publicised a lot more, as we sometimes don't get the recognition we deserve," he noted. "And there are a lot of things that go unrecorded."

Paula Dodds, chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, praised PC Darlow as a "credit" to the force, highlighting his exceptional dedication despite having just completed a demanding night shift.

"Adam had just finished a tiring night shift and should have been heading home for some much-needed rest, but his brilliant policing intuition told him to get off that bus," Dodds stated. "He selflessly entered freezing water to save a vulnerable woman, doubtlessly saving her life. We are all very proud of him."

The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary commitment demonstrated by police officers both on and off duty, with PC Darlow's actions embodying the highest ideals of public service and protection.
